Farm Notes Hacienda La Amistad is owned and operated by Roberto Montero, a third-generation coffee farmer. His grandfather originally surveyed the border between Costa Rica and Panama in the early 1900s, later purchasing 10,000 hectares to cultivate coffee. In a profound act of conservation, the Montero family returned over 6,000 hectares to the government to help preserve La Amistad International Park, Central America’s largest natural reserve. Today, only 300 hectares are utilized for coffee, while the rest of the estate remains preserved forest teeming with native wildlife.

Roberto’s commitment to organic farming pairs harmoniously with his dedication to the community. During the harvest, he provides housing and free medical care for seasonal pickers, primarily indigenous families from Panama who travel together. Year-round, he sustains over 100 full-time jobs—both in coffee cultivation and a dried fruit operation—hosts annual employee celebrations, and distributes school supplies to their children.
