When we first tasted the lots from Spike Farm, we knew we couldn’t just pick one. The complex, spiced sweetness and subtle fruit notes won us over completely.
Nestled high in the Kaira-ini area of Kenya’s Kiambu district at 1,930 meters, Spike Farm was established just over a decade ago. (And if you’re wondering where the name "Spike" comes from, farm manager Moses will tell you matter-of-factly: the owner just liked the name. We love that kind of straightforward simplicity.)
The care put into this coffee, however, is anything but simple. The cherries are meticulously pulped, fermented for 72 hours, washed, and then dried on raised beds for ten days. Next year, they plan to offer variety-specific separations between their SL 28 and Ruiru 11 crops, but for now, this combined harvest delivers an incredible profile.
What to Expect: The dry grounds greet you with the scent of cane sugar, raisin, and cardamom. Once brewed, a grounding sweetness of brown sugar and maple takes the lead, shifting into spiced sarsaparilla and clove as it cools. You’ll find a vibrant structure of fruit tea, dried tamarind, and cranberry — brisk and tangy, but incredibly smooth. If you love the fruited sweetness of Kenyan coffees but usually shy away from their intense citric acidity, this is the perfect cup for you.
